
I awoke at 6am with some trepidation as dawn crept across the valley, bathing its green expanse in a tangerine glow. One of Cheryl’s hearty breakfasts helped settle my nerves and we took a scenic 45-minute drive to Catherine’s Peak via Winterton, past mealie fields and tiny villages. We were met by our Drakensberg Canopy Tour guide leader Thabiso Ndlovu who gave us a safety briefing, strapped us into our harness gear and drove us to a point at the top of the Blue Grotto forest, with its endemic species of birds and plants. From the rabbit hole, as the first platform was aptly named, we plunged like Alice into a wonderland of treetops, vines, dappled sunlight, waterfalls and rainbows...
