Welcome to our Autumn 2010 newsletter. Winter is on its way with both Joburg and Cape Town experiencing their first few cold spells but that doesn’t mean that the action stops up in the trees. This year we’re going to be busier than ever especially with the 2010 World Cup as we welcome a host of new visitors to the Canopy Tour experience. The good news is that we are not raising our prices (like some in the tourism industry) but in fact will be offering family discounts to our loyal South African supporters at most of our Canopy Tour locations. Our advice to you is to please book early over this busy winter period.

Do you know what’s the most popular request on our Canopy Tour comment forms? “More slides!” Yes, these days everyone just seems to want to go higher, faster and longer. To prove that we do listen to our customers loyal fans, we have added three extra slides to the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour and we are in the process of designing two new slides for the Karkloof Canopy Tour. And in case you haven’t checked them out yet, new tours like Drakensberg already boast 12 exhilarating slides and platforms!
But we don’t want our guests to miss out on the beauty of the surrounding forest so we’ve been working equally hard at building and developing our Canopy Tour guides knowledge and narration at each unique forest. This has been done with help from expert ornithologists, specialised field guide trainers, FGASA and consulting ecologists. So next time you’re on a Canopy Tour please take a moment between whizzing along the slides to stop, take a deep breath and take in your spectacular natural surroundings. Alright, off you go again!

As the South African tourism industry gets revved up for the 2010 World Cup just around the corner, we at Canopy Tours® have decided to get into the spirit by running our own Diski Dance competition. This dance will be performed by the guides at each of the 6 Canopy Tour® locations and will be used to welcome both local and international guests over the World Cup period. Entries for the competition were judged at the recent Tourism Indaba in Durban where the guides from Magaliesberg Canopy Tour were judged to be the winners by the South African Tourism marketing department. Congratulations to Magaliesberg, and also to Tsitsikamma and Drakensberg who were judged to be equal second!

Malolotja Canopy Tour - Swaziland |
|
Guide training has just been completed at the new Malolotja Canopy Tour in Swaziland which officially opens in May 2010! Located in the majestic Malolotja Nature Reserve - a mountain wilderness containing lots of game, amazing birdlife and a world renowned display of wildflowers - the Malolotja Canopy Tour is truly unique.
The tour includes sweeping mountain views, cliffside platforms on sheer rockfaces and a 50m long suspension bridge at treetop level just to slow things down between all the slides. The resident baboon troop seems to be getting used to us and sightings of blesbok, secretary birds and jackal buzzards are common occurrences in the reserve. The Malolotja Canopy Tour® is situated on the Piggs Peak road, less than 45 mins from Mbabane and 30 mins from the Oshoek/Ngwenya border post. To make a booking visit www.malolotjacanopytour.com or contact them on +268 7644 2948. |

Samango Monkey vs. The Crowned Eagle |
|
It is common knowledge that the Crowned Eagle, a powerfully built forest hunter, sometimes preys on unsuspecting Samango Monkeys as they jump from tree to tree. Our Karkloof Canopy Tour photographer, René de Beer, recently came across the ghoulish remains of a Samango who had fallen victim to the Crowned Eagle. The photos show how the skull and carcass have been very delicately picked and cleaned of all meat but for some reason the eyeballs were left intact and still seem to show the shock and surprise of the poor monkey at being caught. WARNING! THESE PHOTOS ARE NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH.
